Jaime Oliver's Food Revolution

The last government survey revealed that the unhealthiest city in the United States is Huntington, West Virginia. This was based on the statistics of how many people get sick and how many people die. Do you know what number your city falls on? I know our city is way up there too. We are a nation of fast foods, and junk foods! We are too lazy to prepare and cook our meals! Am I right?? Of course, I am right!! We like the convenience of buying pre-packaged dinners, and carry outs, of mostly junk food! We are always feeding our faces, non stop! Oh,Oh, speak for yourself! Okay, not all, but majority of us fall victims of fast food frenzy! We know that it is bad for us but we still do it! Why? Habit!!!! Convenience!!!! The fast food restaurants now offers nutritious food in their menu, but we seem to ignore it. After all, hamburgers and french fries taste better! Is it not? And it will take us more time to be educated on the proper nutrition and the consequences of eating right!! For one thing, eating right might mean freedom from diabetes and other diseases associated to being obese and longer life span! Maybe these reasons alone can convince us to change our eating habits!Jaime Oliver started his food revolution in the elementary school, 5 to 6 year old kids. He saw that the children were being fed pizza for breakfast, and frozen chicken nuggets for lunch. He cannot believe his eyes! Pizza for breakfast!!! I can believe it because sometimes, I do the same. What I cannot believe is that children eat breakfast in school now? What happened to breakfast at home???? Gone are those days???? Hmmmmm......The change that Jaime was trying to accomplish was not well received by the town people, especially by the cooks in the elementary school. After all, they have been serving the same thing day in and day out and it is sanctioned by the USDA. Jaime did not even know what USDA stands for, because he is British! All he wanted to do is help the city turn around and relinquish the unhealthiest title. The children did not even know the names of the different vegetables, like tomatoes, and eggplant!!! My, oh, my!! He quickly changed that around with the help of the teacher. During lunch, the children were given a choice between pizza and chicken. What do you think the children chose?? That was dumb on Jaime's part, I thought. His hours of cooking the chicken was in vain, dumbo!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! The school ended up throwing lots of chicken and salad!!! The children tried the chicken and salad but they did not like it! It was really sad to see all the food wasted. He ended up on a good note, though, when he served the children a concoction of ground beef, like a sloppy joe, wrapped in a pita. The cole slaw was eaten too!!! There may be hope, after all!!!He also educated a family of five how to cook delicious, and nutritious meals. They were gung ho about it, but he sensed that they cheated, because he saw pop from fast food cups on the table outside their house! I do not think you can just wean them cold turkey with the fast food. It has to be a gradual process. After all, the family have been eating junk all their life!!!! They are not the only ones!!! Many families are doing the same!!! Jaime took the family to a doctor and they found out that one of the kids is in jeopardy of getting diabetes. It was a wake up call to the parents, especially the mother! She does not want to lose her son at an early age! It is going to be a slow process, but the family is determined to change their eating habits for the better. What is also good with this show besides helping people with their eating habits and preferences? He fixed a place where people can try learning how to fix simple, nutritious meals. When I was watching the show, it reminded me of how obssessed we are with junk food, including me and my family. I ended up eating granola bar and an apple, snacks that are much more heathier!!! Stay healthy!!!!!
